I'm pretty sure it is a bug, since things used to work fine, but I may have just changed a setting or something. I am very frustrated by this since the installation was workingvery effectively and I really loved the OneNote functionality. Surely this is a bug. Double click on the icon for the computer with the printer you want to access.
An icon for that printer should appear. If not, go to that computer and make sure that printer is shared. Double click the icon for that printer. A window for that printer appears with a message that the printer is being located. When it finds it, the printer is ready. What I don't remember is doing these steps. I think after I set up sharing, I went to my laptop and tried to print. When I tried to select the printer, I got the "Active Directory" error message. In the instructions I had read about sharing a printer, I don't remember reading that I had to do these three steps.
Maybe to some people it is obvious that you have to do these steps, but to me it was only accidental that I stumbled onto it. Anyway, it works now.
Thanks for the solution. My problem is somewhat different in that I am working on two Vista boxes. I did something different in the procedure of locating the printer, and everything worked.
Before trying to print, I clicked on Network, then my host icon. At that point, I have to enter my user name and password. Then the printer icon.
After those things were located, I then went to the document I wanted to print on my laptop. When I try to print, my host printer now appears in the list of printers and I can select it and it works fine.
Before, all I did was to select the file and try to print it. I couldn't get the icon to appear and got the directory domain error message. Microsoft may simply have to change their instructions. This procedure may have been obvious to some, but it wasn't to me.

I recently purchased a Dell Laptop connect it via Ethernet to the network. After I set up the laptop, I was able to print files from it to the Canon printer connected to the XP I was gone for a month on a trip with the laptop. When I got back, I reconnected the laptop ethernet cable to the Netgear router. It could be the name resolution.
